Strong Enough to Clean: Day One at Our Old Apartment Gym

To put a life back in order, you need time to empty a space and clean it. My problem is that menopause has drained my energy so badly that even cleaning leaves me out of breath. So today I started strength training, in order to clean properly. Now that I am fifty, I have learned that someone as frail as I am can no longer get by on cardio alone.

It was a holiday morning under a clear, impossibly beautiful autumn sky. I quieted the urge to run off to my mother’s home in Seoul for some comfort, and headed for our apartment gym instead. I ate one boiled egg for my protein-starved muscles, and even as I walked through the complex in the autumn sun, the argument went on.

“Do you really have to go to the gym on a gorgeous autumn holiday?”

“Yes, K-Anne. You do. What you need most right now is strength. These days, even when you go out for fun, you have to lie down after two or three hours. Slowly, now. Start with what you need most.”

I ask, and I answer myself.

Our old apartment gym /

Going back and forth between Seoul and Wonju, I have lived in this apartment for fifteen years already. Somewhere along the way it became the gym of an “old” apartment complex, and I find that oddly endearing. I feel more at ease among spaces and things that have some years on them than in the gleaming community facilities of a brand-new complex.

I once looked deep into my own heart to ask why old things put me at ease. I was born with a frail body, and I have never contributed to society by working with my body or making something with my hands. So whether a thing is new or old, I feel grateful when I use something made by someone else’s hard labor. Taking good care of old things, and using them for a long time. I think of it as my small way of keeping yeomchi, the Korean sense of decency that remembers what it owes to others. I am relieved that the answer turned out to be yeomchi, and a little sad, too.

How good it would have been if I had come to know this old gym day by day, all these years. Because of work, because of raising children, because of caring for my in-laws, I hardly ever came. I try to understand the person I was then, and to comfort her.

The rotary torso machine, for the obliques /

I am content with old things, but I still love a new discovery. A machine I have never seen before catches my eye: a rotary torso machine that works the obliques along the waist. I move slowly, and I can feel it working. When I was young, I trained so hard for an international Pilates certification that my abs ached for days. I will not be getting that sleek waistline back. But I gather everything I learned about muscles back then and picture a realistic goal: a body that is firm, for fifty.

The “Stairway to Heaven” /

In Korean gyms the stair climber is known as the “Stairway to Heaven,” and it is the most popular machine on the floor. I press the start button in high spirits, and soon enough I am thinking: getting to heaven is really hard. I step off after about five minutes, yet I am sweating and I feel refreshed. I will add a minute a day and get a little closer to heaven.

Stretching and spacing out / 멍 때리기 스트레칭

I always end a workout with stretching and a little time to space out. Breathing slowly and watching my own breath, it becomes a kind of meditation. In the gym mirror I see someone who has just given herself forty minutes of what she truly needed. It was a short workout, but she looks a little brighter, a little fresher. I promise myself an easy forty-one minutes tomorrow.

What else is there, like going to the gym, that truly matters and yet always comes last?

Maybe it will come to me while I move my body and clean.

It is time to go and clean.
