I am in the thick of menopause these days. For forty years I lived too fiercely in the heart of Seoul, and for the past fourteen I have been raising twins I had late in life. My own health always came last. How to put it — it feels as though the living energy that nature gives has been slowly draining out of me. So a few days ago, I started walking barefoot.
Over the past few months, I have been learning to admit the limits of my body and my mind. I cannot do everything the world now asks of me. So, to put myself back in order, I cut back on my translation work and pared down the clutter of my days. Only now have I made a little time to look after my body and my heart, and I am glad, even a little thrilled, to be writing again.
In my early twenties, an older friend I adored once said to me, “K-Anne, you’re so bright it’s a bit much.” I remember how much it hurt. Thirty years ago, was I just a somewhat cheerful person acting brighter than I was? Or was I truly, innocently bright? I can’t trust my own memory of who I was that long ago, so my conclusion is: I don’t know.
But there is one thing I do know about who I am these days. “That’s just how the world is.” “That’s just how people are.” I caught myself saying things like that, often, to my own precious twin daughters, each one with a thorn at the end of it. And then one day they told me straight: “Because of you, Mom, we found out about the world way too early.” It was not a compliment. I had gone and become the one who spoiled their childhood wonder.
Is it the years? The times? Or simply me? Something dark had been settling over a heart that used to be bright and cheerful and fond of people. I don’t want to leave myself to harden like this, cold and stiff.
I don’t know how bright I originally was, or how much of that brightness I ought to get back. Without asking for too much, I want to find the brightness that feels comfortable to me. If there is such a thing as happiness, perhaps it lives somewhere around there.
Passing through menopause, I can finally see them, not only in my body but in my heart: the lumps that jut out, jagged and unlovely, and the hollows where I was hurt. And now that I can see the wounds, a small courage comes too, a sense that they might be mended.
The first time I set my bare feet on a mountain trail at Chiaksan, I could hardly take a single step. I was sure something would spring out of nowhere and pierce my sole. Still, I took one step, and then another. And then I felt it: a living energy that modern life could never have given me, rising through the soles of my feet and slowly filling me.

That is about where I am standing now. Still careful, barefoot, one step at a time.
